How Chiropractic Sports Saves

How Chiropractic Sports Medicine Can Save Your Season

Just like Memorial Day grill outs, sunburns at the beach, and lazy hot endless summer days, pre-season football and soccer practice is upon us once again.

In most families, and perhaps in yours, the athletic season is an ongoing event – one that makes memories for the entire family. There are the many trips to practice, cheering Junior’s progress from the sidelines, and supporting him through all of the big and small games that he’ll play throughout the season. It’s a ritual, and a celebration. And it’s important.

As a parent, you have a lot of time, effort, capital, and emotions all invested in the sports season. You want to see your son’s or daughter’s season go without a hitch or an interruption – for all of these reasons. So what’s to stop the season cold?

Sports related injuries.

Sprains. Mild concussions. Torn ligaments. Low back pain. Shin splints. Muscle spasms.

Let’s look at some of the important issues that families like yours may face during this next athletic season. Armed with some solid facts and testimony, your young athlete will have a better chance of enjoying the sporting season to the fullest.

What Are the Issues with Sports Related Injuries, Anyway?

The key thing to remember about any sports season is that the time is always critical.

The sports season for any team sport operates on a calendar basis. A typical high school football season is packed into the fall months, and is over by Christmas break.

Being sidelined by a common injury such as an ankle sprain, or even operating at “less than par” from an issue like a stinger (pinched nerve) that most players will deal with by simply not reporting it, can wreak havoc on the athlete’s training and preparedness.

The very last thing that you want to hear, either as a parent or as an athlete, is that the player is being sidelined for several weeks.

But this “solution” is very common when you approach the traditional medical establishment with most common sports injuries.

“Stay off that leg” … “Don’t use that arm”… you’ve heard the doctor’s advice in the past.

This “rehabilitation by abstinence” is usually sound advice, and will work. But the sports season will dribble away, and so will your son or daughter’s preparedness and motivation.

Just remember: It doesn’t have to be that way.

How Chiropractic Sports Medicine Works

Chiropractic care engages the whole person – mind and body – and stresses preventative care and natural solutions to your physical problems. Most patients who use chiropractors will see their caregiver whenever they need a “tune up”… they don’t have to wait for traumatic events or severe pain.

Traditional medicine works quite differently. Most people only report to their doctor when they’re sick or in need … and only for specific ailments and problems. Most doctors today have waiting lists of weeks for appointments.

This is particularly true of sports medicine with the family doctor or clinic. You don’t go to the doctor until and unless you have a problem. Now think about it. Do you drive your car for years without visiting a garage? Most people get regular oil changes and maintenance for their vehicle. Otherwise, they will need a new car much sooner than they should.

Your body is really no different. You should take as good care of your body as you do your car. That means that the human body can use periodic tune-ups.

Chiropractic Sports Medicine Stresses Speed of Recovery

A Sports Chiropractor has specialized training in sports injuries and physical fitness. He is an expert in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal problems. And he is an expert in making the young athlete fully functional and ready to play, in comfort, as soon as possible, after even a disabling injury.

The Sports Chiropractor is your wellness partner in your athlete’s sporting season. His job is to solve the physical problems that result from contact sports, and to also prevent recurring problems.

What kinds of problems?
  • Sprains and Strains
  • Stingers (pinched nerves)
  • Shin splints
  • Muscle spasms
  • Concussions
  • Ankle sprains
  • Hip pointers
  • Low back pain

Chiropractic medicine resembles some of the elements of conventional medicine that involve physical therapy. However, the problems that patients commonly experience with conventional physical therapy include speed of recovery, expense, and access to facilities on on a convenient schedule.

A chiropractor’s practice provides many elements of conventional physical therapy, usually by appointment, but generally at much more convenient times than traditional physical therapy.

In addition, most chiropractic offices provide other vital services that may be part of a treatment plan:

  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Hot and cold treatments
  • Medical massage
  • Ultrasound
  • Physical therapy and exercise sessions tuned to the athlete’s particular needs
The Bottom Line: Chiropractic is for Athletes

With sports chiropractic treatment, the athlete in your family may be back on the field, playing, within a day of an injury that would sideline him or her for a week to a month if treated by traditional medical care.
